SoSe 18: PS-Introduction to Cultural Studies II: Theories of Myth
Nadja Ben Khelifa
Comments
The meaning of myth comprises ‘stories of antiquity’, ‘the mysterious’ and ‘the unknown’ or flat out the other of truth. Thus, it runs the risk of becoming a blanket term. In this seminar we are going to explore the cultural dimension of myth: its relationship with language, science, and the arts, as well as its manifestations in literature, film and architecture. Considering myth a symbolic form, we will look at the epistemological relevance of myth and its function in culture and society. With the support of different theories of myth from the disciplines of philosophy, cultural studies and media studies, we will attempt to find answers to the basic questions of what is myth, how does it mani-fest in (contemporary) culture, and what is its function? close
