SoSe 18: Introduction to American Economic History

The seminar has been developed to nurture critical thinking, survey theories of Nobel Laureates and sculpt an understanding of US economic order after the creation of the Federal Reserve through the lens of Institutional Economics. Focus will be placed on the emergence of the modern firm and modeling of markets. The structure includes 13 sessions covering 7 primary texts from 5 Economic Nobel Laureates and 1 almost Laureate. (Amartya Sen, Douglas North, Ronald Coase, Oliver Williamson, Joseph Stiglitz and Mark Granovetter). These texts provide students with a conceptual lens to shape a dialog around economic order and institutional change in the United States, during the past century. Students will be expected to research 1 of 4 time periods (i.1915 - 1945; ii.1945 - 1970; iii. 1970 - 1990; iv.1990 - 2010) and report their findings in the context of a literature review. Presentations of this research will be organized in the final courses of the semester to provide context to the material and feedback on term papers. The term papers are expected to be literature reviews with well constructed research questions of roughly 4000 words. Presentations of the research are expected to relate contents to primary course texts and will be considered as a part of the final grade. close
