SoSe 18: China and Russia

Anastasiya Bayok

Comments

After the end of the Cold War and the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the world has been dominated by its sole superpower — the USA. The democratization began to spread eastwards, globalization and related to it processes accelerated their pace, western norms and values were getting ever more popularity all over the globe. However, in the last decade this tendency has demonstrated decline. The economic, and increasingly political, power is shifting now from West to East, making East Asia, with China as its main economic motor, one of the most important regions in economic and strategic terms. At the same time, despite the democratization efforts, there is a growing number of authoritarian regimes strengthening their autocratic power within the countries, as well as developing cooperation with other non-democracies regionally and globally, which inevitably leads to the diffusion of authoritarian norms and values. Under this background the ever internationally active role of China with its BRI initiative as well as Russia’s assertive foreign policy are worth being analysed. The objective of this seminar is to investigate the historical development and the present state of bilateral Chinese-Russian relations, identify their place in the system of international relations, analyse the role of both China and Russia within regional and international organisations, their common as well as differing values and interests on international arena, and finally, evaluate the influence of these bilateral relations as well as the impact of China’s and Russia’s foreign policies on the shifting world order. close
