The lecture is to provide the students with a first structured overview of the German and European Data Protection Law based on the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Furthermore, current topics on data protection are being discussed in depth.

- European and constitutional legal background
- Legislative framework: General Data Protection Regulation, Federal Data Protection Act, sector-specific data protection law
- Basic concepts and scope
- Principles relating to processing of personal data and lawfulness of processing
- Rights of the data subject
- Data protection by design and by default, security of processing, data protection impact assessment
- Enforcement of data protection law: supervisory system, sanctions
- Focal points: big data, profiling, social networks, smart video surveillance, processing in the context of employment
