The subject of drinking wine has been treated by poets already before Islam as part of the polythematic ode. Some of the poetic conventions remained components of the genre khamriyya in the Islamic period. It emerged in the course of the 7th century and reached its summit in the time of AbÙ NuwÁs (d. 813). The analysis of selected texts will focus on the development of the genre in different periods, and on the protest poets voiced, implicitly or explicitly, against the norms of religion and society. The protest has been a convention of the polythematic ode already in the pre-Islamic period, but the Islamic interdiction of drinking wine provoked a strong reaction among poets, who set their own philosophy of existence against the teaching of Islam. close
