SoSe 18: (VS) VM: Democracy and Religion in Japan
Prof. Dr. Shigeki Uno
Comments
In this course, we will discuss themes related to democracy and religion in
Japan. Especially we will focus on two important theorists on Japanese
political and religious thoughts: One is Maruyama Masao and the other is
Robert Bellah. Maruyama is a leading intellectual of postwar Japan and
a critic of prewar Japanese militarism. Bellah is an American scholar
of religion and the author of the classical Tokugawa Religion. We'd like to
think the relationship of democracy and religion in Japan in a historical
perspective.
