SoSe 18: Religion in Urban Societies: Perspectives on the longue durée from Cairo, Aleppo and Tunis

The aim of this seminar is to examine the relationship between religion and urban societies in the Arab World in the longue durée under a perspective that embraces different times, contexts, societies and geographies. The teaching will focus on three different cities that present diverse configurations and chronologies: Aleppo, Cairo and Tunis. The idea is to discuss various aspects of the history of the interaction between the religious sphere (Islam, Judaism, Christianism) and the organisation of urban societies.
The seminar in English is followed by a session in Arabic dedicated to the study of a specific text connected to the subject of the seminar.
