SoSe 18: Nationalism. A Global Career

This seminar familiarizes students with theories and global histories of one of the foremost forces in shaping our contemporary world: nationalism – a movement, principle, discourse, or ideology that after several decades of swan songs has recently witnessed a powerful resurgence. It starts with an introduction to the most common theoretical approaches to the study of nationalism from an interdisciplinary perspective, framed around the debate between modernists such as Ernest Gellner and primordialists such as Anthony Smith. The larger second part of the seminar enquires about the extent to which this distinctly Eurocentric brand of theorizing can be extended globally, by discussing case studies from Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America since the early nineteenth century. Particularly, we will grant attention to the intersections between nationalism and identity markers beyond the nation, such as race, class, and gender. We will also engage with recent revisionist approaches to the study of imperial decline and nation-state formation, which have stressed the unforeseeable and contingent nature of transitions from empire to nation, especially in the Habsburg and French colonial setting. The ultimate aim is to provide students with a firmer grasp of how manifold forms of nationalism have molded our contemporary world. close
