SoSe 18: The Global Cold War in the Middle East

Joseph Prestel

Comments

In recent years, historical research has reinforced the image of the Cold War as a global conflict that was not simply limited to the confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union or the iconographic iron curtain that divided Europe. Scholars have shown that a variety of actors around the world took part in the confrontation between the “Free World” and the “Socialist Bloc,” fueling global processes of transformation. But does this “Cold War Lens” (Byrne) also provide a useful perspective on the history of the Middle East during the second half of the twentieth century? Or does it rather risk obfuscating other local and regional dynamics as well as transformative processes on a global scale? This seminar engages with these questions across a number of case studies. A first set of readings will familiarize students with recent debates in Cold War historiography and the concept of the Global Cold War. Drawing on this foundation, we will consider a series of case studies that range from armed conflicts and diplomacy to student activism and architecture in order to examine the usefulness of a Cold War perspective for the history of the Middle East.
