SoSe 18: Slave Rebellions - Slave Resistance in Early America
Sebastian Jobs
Comments
In this seminar we will explore ways in which the institution of slavery in the United States was challenged and questioned. One of the foci will be on slave rebellions and revolts, in which enslaved people fought against their forced bondage. However, we will also discuss the numerous methods enslaved people found to evade slavery that went beyond violenc. Everyday acts of resistance included foot-dragging, religious practices or artistic expressions of selfhood. Finally, we will also look at institutionalized ways to resist - such as the abolitionist movement.
