Alexander Rauhut
Comments
In this course, we will study the history of the English language from its beginnings to the present day, focussing on language structures on all levels of linguistic analysis (phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, text and discourse). Students will be introduced to the most important sources of historical language data and to the main empirical research methods, focussing on corpus linguistics. The first part of the course will focus on the properties and early changes in Old and Middle English, while outlining major language change phenomena. In the second part of the course, the focus will be on empirical methods to study more recent and more specific phenomena of language change in Early Modern to Present-Day English.
