This seminar introduces the empirical analysis of linguistic structures and functions at different levels, with emphasis on figurative language (metaphor and metonymy). It focuses on corpus linguistic and other related observational methods.
In a major methodological shift in metaphor research, linguists have started analysing metaphorical patterns derived from naturally occurring language rather than relying on invented or isolated examples. Corpus-based studies can provide empirical support for the theoretical model, giving examples in a wider context. Language corpora are now employed to a systematic study of metaphors from a range of perspectives. This seminar focuses on two basic strands of corpus research: analysis of linguistic patterns and research into the use of metaphor in specific genres such as political, media, business and others.
The seminar is complemented by a lecture Levels of Linguistic Analysis I: Structures and Functions (on Wednesday from 10 till 12 a.m.) that provides the theoretical and psycho-linguistic background.
