SoSe 18: The Politics of Music: The Twentieth Century Classical Music World in the United States
Kira Alvarez
Comments
What connections and intersections have Western classical music and
politics formed in the United States during the twentieth century? Using
this question as the red thread, this course will introduce students to
the political, social, and cultural history of Western classical music in
the United States from the early twentieth century through the present.
It will survey Western art music in the United States and place its
leading institutions and figures within their historical context. The aim
of the course is twofold: to introduce students to the broad outlines of
the development of classical music in the United States, by examining the
history of major institutions (orchestras and opera companies), figures
(composers, conductors, and performers), and works (relevant operas and
small and large-scale instrumental music) in the American classical music
world. Second, to examine how the study of classical music can serve as a
window to American history in the twentieth century.
