SoSe 18: Gender and Migration in Southeast Asia: The Philippines as Prism
Roderick Galam
Comments
Over the past several decades, gender has become an important analytic category for examining processes of labor migration. Southeast Asia is a region that has experienced some of the biggest movements related to labor. This course focuses on ethnographies of gender and migration in Southeast Asia taking the Philippines as prism through which to investigate various issues germane to gender (both masculinity and femininity) and migration in the region. The course draws on ethnographic studies on and from the Philippines and its diaspora, and takes analogous and contrasting experiences from other Southeast Asian countries.
Experiences are juxtaposed or put in dialogue with each other in order to examine issues more critically and draw out their implications and significance for research on gender and migration in other country or regional contexts. close
