The aim of this lecture is to familiarize students with the literature of what is generally referred to as the ‘long’ fifteenth century. Following a short outline of the important historical, socio-cultural developments, the lecture will first of all provide an overview of those late fourteenth-century works that proved to be especially influential in the fifteenth century, especially poems penned by Geoffrey Chaucer. Subsequently, the lecture will introduce students to the major works of fifteenth- and early sixteenth-century authors, such as John Lydgate, Robert Henryson, Stephen Hawes, Gavin Douglas, and John Skelton.
