SoSe 19: V-Culture-Gender-Media I: Space and Spacial Studies

This lecture course will address what has repeatedly been referred to as the “spatial turn” in the humanities and the social sciences, namely the acknowledgement of the crucial role that space and spatiality play in culture and the arts. Starting with an introduction to relevant spatial theories since the mid-20th century, the lectures will then focus on specific spaces (urban, postcolonial, transnational, global, utopian etc.) and on particular forms of constructing or representing space (e.g. in maps, literary texts, the theatre, or visual media). We will also be concerned with spatial practices, spatial relations, and the social organization of space. Theoretical approaches will be combined with, and explored through, the discussion of a broad range of examples from the field of English/Anglophone literature and culture.
The course will be organised as a lecture course with discussion. Students will be expected to attend regularly and read short texts in preparation of weekly classes.
