This course is designed to give students tools and concepts with which to understand the social organization of religion and the role of religion in Taiwanese society and everyday life after World War II until today. This course will focus on surveying the interactions between religion and society while developing the sociological and anthropological approach to the study of religion as a social institution. We will focus on contemporary and emerging themes in the field and analyze case studies that relate to them. Students will: • gain an insight into Taiwanese religious everyday life • learn a theoretical foundation in the study of belief systems from an anthropological and sociological perspective. • develop a basic understanding of local Christian (Protestant and Catholic), Islamic, Buddhist systems and others are brought in as they appear with various settlements in Taiwan. • develop an understanding of religious revival after the lifting of Martial Law in 1987 and the development of transnational networks from Taiwan to global.
