Medicine, health and healing practices connect people, places and things as much as existing global connections engender disease entities, medical practices, and human subjects circulating in the more-than-human world. This course discusses the global connections in medicine, health and healing in three thematic clusters focusing on (a) theory and practice of medical anthropology intersecting with global health; (b) globalization processes of biomedical, alternative and complementary medicines and healing traditions; and (c) conceptualization of human wellbeing in the more-than-human-world in terms of affective ecologies and multi-species ethnography. Regional diversity of themes will be taken into account in the discussion of ethnographic case studies from Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America. The final session will be devoted to the discussion and practical exercise of writing up the global connections in medicine, health, and healing. Students are expected to come to class having prepared themselves through the close reading of the assigned literature. Schließen
