Kommentar
This course is an introduction to sociolinguistics, the study of the relationship between language and society. We will look at variation at all levels of linguistic analysis through the lens of three variables: ‘race’, gender, and class. The seminar will be articulated along pragmatic phenomena (or speech acts) such as quoting, slurring, or apologising in order to see if and how ethnicity (sometimes referred to as ‘race’), gender, and class are intertwined in the ways we speak. We will explore how linguistic variation constructs and is constructed by identity and culture. An exploration of attitudes and ideologies about these varieties is also at the heart of our understanding of sociolinguistic varieties. Finally, we will also consider some of the educational, political, and social repercussions of these sociolinguistic facts.
