SoSe 19: The World: A History, 1000-2000
Sebastian Conrad
Kommentar
This lecture offers a survey of the global past in the past 1000 years. It ranges from the large medieval civilizations in the Islamic world and in China, all the way to the era of European imperialism, and to late 20th-century globalization. What do we gain by looking at such a long time-frame, and across the globe? The broad temporal and spatial framework compels us to be selective and sometimes overly generalizing; at the same time, it allows us to address a number of large-scale questions that otherwise hardly come into view. Among them: Were there global turning points in the last millennium? What was the role of trade, of war, of empire, of the environment when looked at in the longue durée? The lecture does not require any prior knowledge, only curiosity. And it will be fun! Schließen
