SoSe 19: The Vietnam War: Military, Social and Cultural History
Ivo Komljen
Comments
This class will introduce students to the history of the American War in Vietnam (1965-1975), which claimed the lives of over 58,000 US-Servicemembers and hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese soldiers and civilians. Beyond highlighting some of the major scholarly and public debates surrounding its origins, questions of legitimacy, and reasons for America’s failure, the course seeks to explore some of the central themes in recent Vietnam War historiography. What are some of the key insights from examinations of this conflict through the prisms of race, class, and gender? Who is “the American soldier”, and how have representations of him changed over time? How did the experiences of African Americans and other minorities who served in the military differ from those of their Caucasian counterparts? To what extent did events in the United States have an impact on the daily lives of Americans stationed in Vietnam and vice versa? We will be discussing these and other related questions on the basis of pre-selected key texts and a wide range of primary sources, including official reports, personal letters, and oral histories.
