Shakespeare Past and Present: The Tempest
The course focuses on a single play by Shakespeare – The Tempest – and its history of adaptation and postcolonial appropriation. We will look at a number of famous rewritings from seventeenth-century poet John Dryden to Aimé Césaire’s Une Tempête (1969). Marina Warner’s Indigo (1992) and Margaret Atwood’s Hag-Seed (2016). Furthermore we discuss film adaptations (such as Peter Greenaway’s Prospero’s Books from 1991) and recent stagings. The course aims to provide you with an in-depth understanding of Shakespeare’s play and of its continuing and global influence as well as with a deeper understanding of the politics of adaptation.
