Comments
In this course we will study the development of English as a European language, focussing on language structures on all levels of linguistic analysis (phonology, morphology, semantics, linguistic typology). Students will be introduced to the main concepts of language change and language contact. Examples from English and other European languages will serve to illustrate the main changes that have occurred from Indo-European to the present day. The course will give an introduction to methods from both historical and contrastive linguistics, enabling the students to describe, explain and evaluate linguistic change and contact phenomena.
