Zoe Sutherland
Comments
A suspicious death, no justice, no peace: the question for the characters in revenge tragedies - and for us - is what to do about it, how to act. This introductory level course explores the politics and cross-cultural encounters, the philosophy and history of the series of plays about revenge written in English at the turn of the seventeenth century. In addition to the most renowned revenge tragedy in English literature, William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, we will read
The Spanish Tragedy
by Thomas Kyd andThe Revenger’s Tragedy
by Thomas Middleton. The set text (which students should bring to each class) isFive Revenge Tragedies
, ed. Emma Smith (London: Penguin, 2012). Secondary reading will be provided each week. Assessment is by term paper. close13 Class schedule
