The rise of visual sociology (or visual studies) has a twofold explanation: Visual documentation has become much more popular as a method since the technologies needed for it are now easily accessible – like photography and video. It is no surprise that these methods have created an extensive methodological reflection on using/producing visual data. On the other hand we now live in a social world that is characterized by an overwhelming(ly) visual “enlightenment” – the information is in the light. The consumption of visual data is something which we are no longer aware of, it’s just there - we take it for granted. The popularity of Instagram, Snapchat, Youtube and Vimeo may illustrate this. Vlogs have become the most recent peak in that popularity. But there is also a “high culture” of the visual (arts and professions) which cannot be neglected. -----
This course will introduce you to both, to the visual methodologies and to a social world after its visual, its “iconic” turn. It will combine “viewing”, theoretical reflection and practical exercises. Those who take the course for ABV requirements will encounter a particular emphasis on practices. Bring your equipment for photography/video (smartphones, cameras etc.) to the first meeting. -----
