Comments
This seminar aims at giving a concise overview about the comparative research and methods of life course approach in sociology. We will start with an introduction to the major perspectives and concepts – such as trajectories, transitions, turning points – and continues with exemplifying the life course paradigm in different life domains – such as education, work and family. Life courses can be defined as „endogeneous causal relations“ (Mayer 1990) and are embedded in social structures and institutional as well as historical contexts. The seminar compares differences and changes of life courses across countries and time and will also examine issues such as individualisation and de-standardisation. The thematic sessions will be accompanied with issues on methods and datasets that should motivate students to actively work with longitudinal data. Participants of this seminar should be familiar with fundamentals of quantitative methods. close
