Australia: the land of Skippy, skin cancer, Uluru, the 2000 Sidney Olympics and any amount of open space that attracting immigrants and tourists. This predominantly white society is today becoming increasingly aware of the injustice and repression which has been inflicted on the indigenous population over the last centuries. In this seminar we will be looking at different perspectives on the postcolonial situation of Australia in literary and filmic approaches. We will focus on such issues as origin, belonging, whiteness, racism, and transnationalism.
