SoSe 19: Hajj: Islamic Pilgrimage in a Global History Perspective
Ulrike Freitag
Comments
This seminar considers the Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca from the perspective of global history. After an introduction in the religious foundations and practices of the hajj in comparison with other pilgrimages, the seminar will discuss different aspects of the hajj as a practice creating both new connections (between people, but also in terms of new infrastructures and trade) and an awareness of difference among its participants. The hajj was also a bone of international contention, notably since the 20th century and, nowadays, has become a field of experimentation with global tourism. The main focus of the seminar will be the 19th and 20th centuries, although earlier periods will be discussed notably in the introductory sessions. close
