Seminar
SoSe 19: Globalization and the Management of African Societies
Sara Dehkordi
Comments
Whereas Samir Amin's texts have been course material in both, academic centers of critical thought in the Global South and North, his role as analyst and director of various Africa related institutions whose work focuses on the impacts of development aid, urban and rural planning, the extraction of natural resources and the role of international and national policy makers, amongst others, is less discussed. Throughout his work, Amin raises awareness about highly layered institutional structures that "manage" African societies, without treating the complexities of different African political, economic, and social contexts as a homogenous entity. In this seminar, we will think with Amin about the impacts of neocolonial, globalized capitalism on African societies and critically review dominant urban and rural development discourses imposed on the continent. close
