Course Description:
This course will give a general overview of U.S. law and the U.S. legal system with some reference to its English heritage. The topics will include: (i) U.S. constitutional law, including federalism, the structure and functions of the three branches of the U.S. government, and individual civil and criminal rights; (ii) U.S. civil procedure, with some special emphasis on international dispute resolution, conflicts of law and alternative dispute resolution; and (iii) some selected areas of substantive U.S. law, including contract law, product liability law and antitrust/competition law with some special emphasis on the extraterritorial reach of U.S. law. The teaching method will be mainly lectures with some class discussion. There will be particular focus on case law of both historical and current interest. The instructor, who is an experienced U.S. lawyer with special experience in international dispute resolution, will supply written materials for each class section.Course Type:
