ONLINE COURSE ----- Our everyday life is dominated by mediated communication; whether it is a face-to-face interaction, newspaper circulation or a Tweet, we are constantly interacting through direct or mass communication. This course comes at the subject of self, identity, community and society building from sociological and multiple thematic perspective. The purpose of this course is to connect the history and development process of media and our society, to understand the deep relationship between the two. This course provides an overview of sociological theories and media theory in relation to some of these theoretical discourse. I expect students to come away from this course with a good understanding of media theory as well as key sociological theories, to be able to integrate the two in understanding our identity and community. Although this course requires basic knowledge of sociology, it is not a must as we will cover most of the basics in the first two weeks. However, as these will simply highlight the key terms and theories, you should read up on your own to inform yourself outside classroom readings. Students will learn to connect their interests and personal questions with ideologies and theoretical frameworks we discuss in class and will present a project during the last 3 weeks of the semester, along with other readings. Assigned response papers for each week will ask very specific questions about the topic of the week and will expect to bring them into discussion during class. Schließen
