SoSe 20: Los Angeles: Past, Present, Future
Jeremy Williams
Kommentar
ONLINE COURSE. Stand at the end of Santa Monica pier and you have reached the end of the United States, both geographically, but perhaps also as an idea. The postmodern geographer Edward Soja once wrote that “it all comes together in Los Angeles”. But what is “it”? The class will attempt to answer this question through using Los Angeles as a lens through which to explore a series of local-specific yet broader social, political and cultural dynamics. We will explore Los Angeles as a retro-futurist city, filled with melancholy past reminders of an imagined future. We will investigate the role of Los Angeles and the image, both in the primacy of spectacle and through interrogating the way in which Los Angeles “plays itself”. We will probe dynamics of race, space, money and class in a city where they are constantly in conversation and conflict. And in the elusively polycentric city where there is famously no 'there' there, we will attempt to capture something tangible of its seductive contradiction.
