Topics include: the end of Reconstruction; Mark Twain’s Adventures of Huckleberry Finn; the emergence of a capitalist-nationalist imaginary; realism and naturalism as literary modes; the “New Woman”; urbanization and class conflict; social utopias, media transformations, and early cinema.
