ONLINE COURSE - This course will explore different meanings of manhood in American history until the twentieth century. The last 20 years have seen an ever-increasing interest in the study of masculinities, especially in the United States. In class we will follow these debates both theoretically and empirically, as we will discuss topics like sexuality, race, sports, religion and violence that help to understand the historical construction of masculinities in the United States as a social and cultural phenomenon. This is a discussion-based seminar and it is a group endeavor. Therefore, everyone is responsible for maintaining a respectful atmosphere that allows for a productive and open debate. In order to foster such debates doing the readings is absolutely necessary for participation in this class, as is regular attendance. Please, get in touch with me, if you end up missing more than two classes. Finally, be advised that we will speak about topics that some might find troubling and offensive such as racism, violence and sex. Literature: All readings for this class are available as pdf files on Blackboard. Research Paper: Those seeking writing credit in this class are expected to compose a twenty-page term paper on a topic oft their choice within the realm of this class. To get a head start on the writing process, please see me during my office hours before the end of May. Students working on research papers are required to draft a research proposal that will outline their specific research question(s), theoretical concepts employed, the materials they intend to use and a tentative TOC (deadline: 26 May 2020). The deadline for handing in the final papers (as pdf) is 15 August 2020. While there is no official style sheet for writing papers, I recommend following the Chicago Manual of Style. Schließen
