SoSe 20: PS-Medieval English Literatures: Saints and Heroes in Anglo-Saxon Literature

Jan-Peer Hartmann

Kommentar

When we examine Old English heroic poetry, Christianity is never far off, even in poems dealing with ostensibly pagan heroes such as Beowulf. But the influence (if we want to call it that) is mutual: Christian saints, as depicted in the surviving Old English and Latin literature of that time, frequently bear traces of the heroic. In this seminar we will discuss a number of texts produced in Anglo-Saxon England (c. AD 700-1000) that complicate our modern notions of early medieval heroism and sainthood, including The Wanderer, Beowulf and The Dream of the Rood. Students should bring to this class a basic interest in medieval literature and a general open-mindedness to unfamiliar linguistic and literary forms and conventions. The final mark will be based on regular and active participation and a final essay of 2000 words, to be handed in by the end of the semester. Schließen
