SoSe 20: PS-Introduction to Cultural Studies: Studying the Body

Cultural Studies have drawn our attention to the fact that the human body is not just ‘there’, as a mere biological given. Instead, it forms the basis for our engagement with the world and is the site where the relationship between the individual and culture is forged. Subjectivities are constructed, in complex processes of social constraint and individual identification, along the lines of gender and race, and it is through dressing, shaping, and decorating the body (through e.g. fashion, jewellery, tattoos, sports) that cultural identities are performed and communicated. The course will give an introduction to a variety of approaches to studying and analysing the body. Readings of relevant theoretical texts in the field will be complemented with examples from film, literature, the visual arts, and popular culture.
All reading for the course will be provided online on Blackboard.
Assessment will be on the basis of regular and active attendance, participation in all classroom activities (e.g. presentations, group work, response papers), and an essay of c. 2000 words.
