This introductory course looks at China’s environmental development and challenges with a focus on the post-Mao era. It aims to enable students to gain an understanding of different environmental issues and critically discuss concepts of pollution, degradation and sustainability. Cases will highlight key moments and debates in China’s pursuit of green transformation that exemplify the complex dynamics of socio-environmental change and its stakeholders.
The course will be structured around the mandatory reading of Judith Shapiro’s book “China’s environmental challenges” (2nd edition, 2016). Due to the unusual circumstances of the semester, online exchange will take different formats throughout the course. This will include online discussion sessions in small groups, individual writing tasks and feedback, as well as short inputs from students to expand upon issues raised in Shapiro’s writing. Detailed requirements for students of different modules will be discussed in class at the beginning of the semester. Since the course will depend upon pro-active participation, please have a look at a short description and the table of contents of Shapiro’s “China’s environmental challenges” (2nd edition, 2016) to determine your interest in what the course has to offer.
