Kommentar
In this course students will be introduced to basic topics and debates connected to the relationship between the Chinese Party-state and the cultural sector. Students will learn about China’s cultural policy, about tools and mechanisms that the Party-state uses to regulate cultural production, and about how the Party-state makes use of culture for propaganda purposes.
The main case study will be the Chinese film industry. Through this, students will gain an understanding of how cultural policy works in practice. They will accumulate basic knowledge about this sector and learn about related debates, for example regarding the sector’s history from the studio system to the gradual retreat of the Party-state, different film genres, film festivals, and the relationship between China’s film sector and Hollywood.
During the second part of the class, students will (if possible, jointly) work on small projects, which they will present and discuss in one of the last sessions. They can choose a topic of their interest related to the course’s theme and will learn to develop a research topic and a research question. They will gain an understanding about appropriate sources and learn to discuss each other’s work.
