ONLINE COURSE. How does a love relationship of two writers affect their work and vice versa? Who wins in such a literary workshop? Robert Lowell and Elizabeth Hardwick, Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes, Zelda and Scott Fitz-gerald are among those creative couples, and their literary dialogue documents the mutual inspiration, communication, and rivalry. As we analyze selected literary texts as well as autobiographical documents we will explore the intersection of art and life, of fiction as a means of survival and as an integral part of the relationship. Also, the question will be discussed how mental illness affects both the writing and the relationship. Sociologists Eva Illouz and Niklas Luhmann and their respective concepts of love and marria-ge in modernity will give us a theoretical background to ask meaningful questions. Toward the end of the semester we might compare the literary couples with artists like Marilyn Monroe and Arthur Miller as well as Joan Baez and Bob Dylan whose writings also reflect their attitude vis-à-vis art and partnership.
