SoSe 20: The Politics and Policies of the US in International Organizations

ONLINE COURSE. International organizations (IOs) play a significant role in governing a wide range of global issues that affect us all, including security, finance, trade, and the environment. Nevertheless, IOs appear to be under fire from civil society groups, from established global powers such as the US, and from rising powers such as China. Given the current global political climate that appears to undermine the importance of IOs and to devalue international cooperation, this course re-examines the reasons states have to cooperate (or not) through IOs and what role these organizations play in providing global public goods. The course will undertake this task in three steps: I) by studying the politics of international cooperation from a variety of theoretical perspectives, II) using case studies to apply these theoretical insights to specific international organizations tasked with addressing global policies, such as development, peacekeeping, trade, and climate change, and III) finally, it will ask whether there are alternative institutions emerging to challenge the traditional liberal international order and with what potential consequences for that order. Along the way, the course will also consider how to engage with the different methodological approaches present in the readings. Schließen
