The aim of this seminar is to examine the relationship between religion and urban space in societies of the Arab World.
The seminar will examine this question in the longue durée under a perspective that embraces different times, contexts, societies and geographies. The teaching will focus on a set of diverse cities that present various configurations and chronologies. Among such cities: Aleppo, Cairo, Algiers, Beirut and Tunis. The idea is to discuss the history of the interaction between the religious sphere (Islam, Judaism, Christianism) and the organisation of urban societies, as well as the spatial and social construction of urbanity.
