During the excursion, we will visit archaeological sites and museums. The itinerary will depend on the availability of Dutch colleagues and opening times of museums. Possibilities include a Neolithic flint mine, megalithic monuments (Neolithic passage graves), Bronze Age grave mounds, Celtic fields, the Roman limes, a Roman bathhouse and Roman villa. We will also try to visit an archaeological excavation. In the seminar accompanying the excursion, we will start with Late Pleistocene habitation and Mesolithic hunter/gatherers and then move on to early farmers. We will cover prehistoric burial rites, settlements and agricultural systems. With the Romans came the first urbanisation and the first large-scale agrarian businesses. Finally, the modern archaeological system in the Netherlands will be discussed.
