Daniel Schönpflug
Hinweise für Studierende
This seminar will be taught remotely from April, 20th to July, 13th - or as long as regulations do not allow meetings in the classroom. Seminar sessions will be held on Mondays, 6-7.30 p.m., using the software "WebEx" (which works best if you have a computer with camera and microphone and a cable connection from your computer to your router). Course material such as the syllabus, bibliography and weekly reads will be provided on the platform "Blackboard". As every seminar, the course will require regular and active participation based on thorough preparation. A written term paper will be due by the end of the semester. Let me add a warning to students who have attended my courses in the past: Due to the fact, that library access is very limited at the moment, I will draw on texts and other material that I have already used in previous seminars. Napoléon Bonaparte was drawn to historical role models such as Alexander, Julius Cesar or Charlemagne. But as France was expanding over large parts of Europe and striving to enlarge its colonial possessions, the commander and statesman attempted nothing less than a re-invention of existing models of Empire. Unlike Great Britain, France had become a democratic nation state in the wake of the revolution of 1789 before it was transformed into a multi-national imperial realm. How to deal with the contradiction of military force and liberty? How to make use of modern communication techniques and infrastructures, of new military and economic cultures for Empire-building? How to marry nationalism and the diversity of cultures within the realm? These questions were at the heart of modern imperialism, and they will be the core of our seminar's discussions. Schließen
