SoSe 20: Are we in the Age of the Anthropocene? Historical Approaches to Climate Change and Environmental Management

Hinweise für Studierende

Due to the currently unpredictable situation, we will clarify details of the ideal format together at the beginning of the semester. In principle, you can assume that it will consist of a mixture of synchronous and asynchronous teaching and learning, but requirements for "active participation" will only be in written form to be uploaded on Blackboard. The seminar will continue to be based on text reading (PDFs on Blackboard), and the written requirements will be in the form of response papers and forum contributions on Blackboard so you can provide them flexible regardless of stable internet connections or time zones. In addition, there will be shorter video conferences and/or live chats (possibly in smaller groups, probably Webex or Zoom). For the video conferences and/or live chats, the official seminar times are generally used as a guideline, but we will definitely not hold 14 sessions of 90 minutes online but organize short synchronous sessions after consultation. I would like to discuss the details with you in the first seminar session ideally in the form of a video conference at the official seminar time, to which I will invite you by email. If you are not able to attend, please contact me in advance by email, and we will find a solution. Schließen

In 2000 Nobel-prize winning geologist Paul Crutzen popularized the idea of the Anthropocene – theorized as the geological Age of Man. In the meantime the concept has been broadly appropriated in sciences and politics to grasp how humans interacted with the natural word and to evaluate the human “footprint” on nature. In this seminar we will critically engage with the emergence of the concept and it’s historical background, its adoption in various fields, ranging from the discipline of history to popular culture. We will also address the question, how debates about climate change or environmental management are linked to the term and how we can make sense of it in historical terms. Further questions we will engage with are: Is the concept useful as a methodological tool within historiography and environmental history? Or shall we rather engage in debunking the concept as a particular form of political economy? Schließen
