This course expands on selected topics of Introduction to TEFL (Grundkurs) and links them to classroom practice. We will look at selected current trends and innovations in English as a foreign language teaching and investigate a range of contemporary approaches to learning English as a foreign language, including teaching and learning of the five language skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing, viewing) and knowledge areas, e.g. grammar and lexis. Students are expected to attend class regularly and to participate actively, which includes a presentation (“Impulsreferat,” approx.10 minutes, with handout). The topic of the “Hausarbeit” (requirements to be found in the style sheet) can either be taken from this course or from the “Grundkurs”, the first constituent of the “Basismodul”. The paper is to be handed in after successful completion of both module constituents (“Grundkurs & Proseminar”).
Focus areas: This course particularly focuses on using digital media in the English as a foreign language classroom. Thus, we will discuss the benefits and constraints of using digital tools in the classroom and reflect how to use them in the classroom.
