The course gives students an introduction to China’s foreign economic relations. We trace the trajectory of China’s integration into the world economy, starting with Deng Xiaoping’s reform and opening period and continuing until the most recent developments under Xi Jinping. During the first part of the course, we will get an understanding of basic concepts in international economic relations and insights into China’s domestic policy-making process. We will discuss China’s global value chain integration, foreign currency control, international trade and investment agreements as well as China’s approaches to regional and international organizations, such as the WTO and ASEAN. During the second part of the course we will assess China’s international economic relations with individual regions and countries around the world. We will look at selected cases, such as the European Union’s investment screening procedure, information and communication technology investments in African countries, the trade dispute with the United States, and cross-border water governance along the Mekong River. Students will debate the multiple modes of economic interactions and gain an understanding of the nexus between economic questions and political, social, security, and environment related issues. Classes will be held in English and German. Most materials will be in English. Schließen
