SoSe 20: Constituting the Canadian State

Julie Sunday

Kommentar

This course explores Canadian constitutional conventions and their impact on governance, identity and democratic legitimacy. The Canadian Constitution has been described as a “Living Tree” and this course will analyse discussions and debates regarding its evolving character. The course will begin with a theoretical approach to “Constitutions” and their role in determining the boundaries of the political community – or the demos. Students will then apply this knowledge to analyse the Canadian context in two key areas: - The impact of constitutional structures on Canadian governance models, including the relationship between Parliament, the Judiciary and the political executive; - The impact of the Constitution on notions of identity and belonging – specifically who comprises the Canadian state and what they seek in terms of recognition. The course will consider emerging challenges and opportunities in Canada, critically analysing implications for state/society relations and evolving notions of citizenship. Schließen
