  Kommentar
The seminar is intended to be a general introduction to early rabbinic literature. Students are invited to familiarize themselves with: a] the basic outline of the corpora of early rabbinic texts (for example Mishnah,Tosefta, halakhic midrashim, up to the Babylonian Talmud); b] various types of early rabbinic interpretation utilized by these texts and its distinguishing styles; c] important text-witnesses of the Babylonian Talmud [given as the best known example of all Rabbinic writings] and its most influential ‘translations’ d] questions about the ‘settings,’ in which these texts are learned, e.g. Jewish vs non-Jewish; original languages [Hebrew & Aramaic] vs. translations; traditional vs. academic; ‘classic’ vs modern. Text examples will help to illustrate the learning objectives. Knowledge of Hebrew would be an asset but is not required. Schließen
