Kommentar

This annual course is for students with basic knowledge on Basque language (level A1-A2), Euskara, or for students who have already attended the previous courses Baskisch 1 and Baskisch 2. This annual course stars every Wintersemester (Part 1) and continues in the Sommersemester (Part 2). The aim of the course is to master the basic language skills in Basque (work, family, health, nature, hobbies, art…) to be able to communicate with Basque speakers and start developing an access to the diverse production in Basque language (media, literature, cinema, music…). The course will focus on developing a systematic acquisition of the syntactic and morphological structures of the language in order to create autonomous Basque students. At the end of the course, the students has developed a firm basic knowledge of the language (communicative and linguistic). The Basque language attracts the attention of linguists because it is said to be one of the oldest languages in Europe and the only surviving pre-Indo-European language in Western Europe. The origin of the Basque language is still unclear and often myths and false assumptions have been created on this subject. Today, Euskara is present on the internet, at university, in literature... It is a very lively language, although it lives in a situation of diglossia, and the coexistence of languages (Basque, Spanish and French) and various social factors sometimes cause conflict. It has 800,000 speakers in northern Spain and southern France, and a hard-to-predict number of diaspora speakers (especially in the US, Paris and several Latin American cities). Keep the journey to the wonderful language of the Basque country, full of enigmas, strong and peculiar customs that will be discovered through very dynamic activities, such as interactive presentations, brief dialogues, games, songs… These courses are organised in cooperation with the Basque Language and Culture Institute Instituto Etxepare. Every year students from the Institute´s international network of universities will have the chance to apply for scholarships to study Euskara in summer at the Basque Country or to develop projects, bachelor thesis, master thesis, and PhDs related to the Basque language and culture.
