In this course we will investigate the ways in which citizens and organised interests can interact with the European Union outside the normal mode of democratic participation, i.e. elections. Like all political systems, the EU has a multitude of access points for interest groups who would like to see their preferences reflected in EU policy. Such interest groups both actively approach EU institutions and are in turn approached by EU institutions in an elaborate system of consultation.
We will look at general concepts of state and civil society interaction, identify the interest groups active at the EU level, discuss the various channels of access to the EU policy-making process and look at modes of conflict resolution.
Online-teaching makes it difficult to simulate the classroom experience of jointly discussing a text. Depending on the size of the class, we will form a number of smaller groups to handle online discussions, which will happen Wednesdays from 14-16.00, but will be shorter to allow one session per group. That makes it all the more important that you prepare the reading well. In addition, I will ask you to complete a small number of research exercises related to the reading each week, which we will collect in a joint document for everyone by the end of the course. close
